For optimal use, trim the wick before each burn (except the first) and allow the wax to melt fully to the edges before putting it out.

First burn: let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel. This prevents tunnelling for the life of the candle.
Before every burn: trim the wooden wick and let the wax melt evenly across the surface.
